I AM NIGERIA ( what Nigeria means to you in the past, present and future)

by 245316 in on November 23, 2021

Breastfed by colonization

Spoon-fed by our struggle for independence

Played on the soil

on which our forefathers

sweated and toiled

because of the future they saw

Beat our chests

that we were now ruling us

Dined and celebrated

in glimpse of our own paradise

all on the table of October 1,1960

Only to find out that

we were cheerleading for a country

that never scored the goal;

like helping to push

For a pregnant woman

that never delivered

Welcome to current Nigeria!

Welcome to our fallen economy!

Welcome to our diversity

Strongly bonded by aversion!

Welcome to hopes

now drowned deep in the sea!

We still sing our national anthem

with hungry mouths

fed only by the

hope of a better tomorrow

Nothing is shared equally here

Except for bribery and corruption

of which though our leaders

have the highest share

Democracy is the mask we wear

To blend in as a country

However, there is a bun in the oven!

And it is a very promising one

We can’t jump ship now

Let us continue cheering on

Pick up our hopes from where we left them

We can only do this United!

We are the giant of Africa!

We are the next wonder the world is about to see!
